I forgot to include this last week. Discover the beauty of the Caldecott-winning picture book Locomotive by Brian Floca! Follow a family as they travel westward by train in the summer of 1869. Full of information, lyrical text, and breathtaking illustrations, this is perfect for read-alouds at home or at school!

Noah Webster and His Words by Jeri Chase Ferris, Illustrated by Vincent X. Kirsch [***]

Noah Webster and His Words by Jeri Chase Ferris, Illustrated by Vincent X. Kirsch [***]

A fascinating look into the life of a man who saw his love for words as a way to unite a divided nation! His dedication has earned him a coveted spot in many people’s bookshelves! Great for vocabulary building, as well.

Parrots Over Puerto Rico by Susan L. Roth, Illustrated by Cindy Trumbore [***]

Parrots Over Puerto Rico by Susan L. Roth, Illustrated by Cindy Trumbore [***]

This award winning picture book offers two narratives- the near extinction of the Puerto Rican parrots and a slight history of the island. I enjoyed how this provides readers an account of a group of people who saw a problem, did something about it, and are making continuous progress with their work. The collage illustrations are very striking. Kids may also get a kick from having to read it vertically. More information about the recovery effort can be found after the story.
