This week I’m celebrating libraries.

It was actually last week I attended a talk by David Vinjamuri who presented his “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Publishing World” show to a roomful of librarians and book lovers. His name might be a bit familiar since he wrote a couple of articles on Forbes about one of our greatest public institutions that got lots of views.

He shared a few very interesting stories about what some libraries across the country have been doing to reinvent themselves in the eyes of the public.

He also talked about the changing landscape of the publishing world and how self-published books are becoming even more prominent, making their ways to lots of people’s shelves, e-readers, and bestseller lists. My ears definitely perked up on this because of my upcoming project.

This past Wednesday, we held our Annual Meeting for Friends of the Multnomah County Library. I’m beginning my third year on it and am looking forward to acting as the Board Secretary and Co-Chair of the Membership, Communications, Marketing, and Technology Committee! It’s really great to be part of a group that is as passionate about libraries as I am.

Congratulations on your continuing board position. Libraries are a gift we don’t value enough. I just took a group of my students to our public library. So many resources that students and parents don’t realize. Something about libraries just fill me with hope.
