This week I’m celebrating Brian Selznick’s Arbuthnot Honor Lecture. It’s also my Audio/Video Pick of the Week.
After watching it, I emailed someone about it right away. Here’s an excerpt of it:
“I don’t know if you know who Brian Selznick is. I’m assuming you do since you’re so well read. Anyway, he just gave a rather inspiring and exhilarating speech as part of having received the May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture Award. If you ever have time- it is rather long,- I highly encourage you to watch it. His talk is entitled, “Love Is a Dangerous Angel: Thoughts on Queerness and Family in Children’s Books.” He has articulated the importance of books reflecting not just a select few but all of us.
He also recommended great titles along the way, including The Borrowers, the Bible, and Two Boys Kissing, just to name a few. He talked in length about Weetzie Bat, which I know you love, and his admiration for the book and Francesca Lia Block. And I want to read it now.”
(I’m currently in the middle of my Vegas vacation. I’m typing this on my phone so that’s why this post looks different.)
What are you celebrating this week?
