I’ve been on a nonfiction picture book kick recently. I’m sharing some of the books this week and saving some for next week when I’m away on vacation.
Solving the Puzzle Under the Sea: Marie Tharp Maps the Ocean Floor by Robert Burleigh

Fascinating. I think a part of me is more curious about what’s under the water than what’s in outer space. It’s cool to read about Marie Tharp who despite outdated thinking proved her ability and contributed so much to the world’s knowledge about our planet! Includes more biographical information and a “things to wonder about an do” section at the back.
A Wizard from the Start: The Incredible Boyhood and Amazing Inventions of Thomas Edison by Don Brown
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
An interesting look into the life of Thomas Edison and how his curiosity led him to invent or improve many things. I liked that he seemed practical and was obviously a hard working man. I’m glad that his rivalry with Nikola Tesla was mentioned (in the back matter).
Twenty-Two Cents: Muhammad Yunus and the Village Bank by Paula Yoo

I’d been wanting to read this (and watch the documentary “To Catch a Dollar”) for awhile now. The book talks about Muhammad Yunus’ mission to ensure everyone has the opportunity to lift themselves out of poverty. I appreciated how instead of just giving away his money, he thought of long-term and innovative solutions. It’s like the old saying of “Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, he’ll feed himself for his lifetime.” An inspiring read which makes me want to learn more about him and Grameen Bank.
