Finally! I’ve been excited for this book (and series that will feature Filipino historical figures.) I never knew of Larry Itliong even with all the books I’d read about Cesar Chavez. It really is amazing how many people’s stories get pushed to the side and how important that they finally get told.
I wish the book wasn’t so long but I’m glad this exist. And I hope they stick with traditional book page numbering in future editions and future titles.
Sewing the Rainbow: The Story of Gilbert Baker and the Rainbow Flag by Gayle E. Pitman

I wished I liked this more because (1) I love Gayle Pitman’s books and (2) it’s so great whenever an LGBTQ person’s story is told. I was super excited to learn more about Gilbert Baker but there were parts in this book that left me scratching my head. I thought I had skipped over a page when they mentioned that they were looking for a new symbol to replace the negative one but they didn’t specify in the text what the negative old symbol was. I wouldn’t have minded if it was included in the illustration but it wasn’t so that left me baffled. And it would have been nice if they included a section that explains what the colors meant. Such a missed opportunity considering how many recent books there are doing just that.

Dolly Parton by Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara

Little People, Big Dreams is a picture book biography series imported from Spain. Perfect way to introduce young readers to girls who dreamed and became outstanding women in different fields. I wish they focused more on her activism since this wasn’t as impactful as most others in the series.
