The second and third titles in the Fox and Hen series of wordless picture books are surprising stories about family.

Big Bug by Henry Cole [**]- Great bold illustrations. Nice concept book about sizes and perspective. Wish it ended differently though.

The Girl and the Bicycle by Mark Pett [***]- I admit I got teary eyed on this one. This story has a great message of how hard work pays off and the surprising kindness of people. I loved the attention to detail with the illustrations.

Ask Me: 100 Essential Poems of William Stafford by William Stafford [***]- A great collection of poems by William Stafford's son, Kim Stafford who is also a poet. 2014 marks the centennial of William Stafford's birth and an Oregon Reads selection this year.

This week, I’m hoping to finish Agatha Christie’s The Murder on the Links. I’m also reading John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath.

Have a great reading week!

  1. I should probably look into getting this Babymouse book for my class, they like the ones they already have. Have a great reading week.

  2. We just had a discussion about ‘grit’ last week. It looks like The Girl And The Bicycle would fit this very well. Thanks for all the others too, Earl.

  3. I’ve only read one William Stafford poem once for school and although I don’t quite remember it I think I quite liked it! I always quite enjoy reading children’s literature because there authors really try to integrate big themes into the story rather than just plonk them right in front of the reader to deal with! Thanks for sharing 🙂 I hope you enjoy all of your books!

  4. Big Bug-what a pretty cover. My students would snatch it up for cover appeal. I was lucky enough to pick up and have autographed a copy of Happy Birthday Babymouse at TX Library Association Conference. Love that Jenni Holm!

  5. I’ll have to add the new Babymouse to our next order. They are good for my youngest graphic novel fans. I remember really liking The Grapes of Wrath when I read it years ago. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  6. Before I started reading your post, I was searching for The Girl and the Bicycle. When I couldn’t find it in my CT library search, I returned to your post and saw your comment that it is coming out at the end of April. Darn! I added it to my TBR list. Have you read The Boy and the Airplane? It is by the same author, and it came up in my search. 🙂

  7. I read two poetry books last week, and I’ve been meaning to know more of Stafford’s poetry – seems like this book is a great place to start. Good to know about The Girl and the Bicycle – sounds like a title that I could include in my multicultural children’s lit text-set.
